The
Orient Point Lighthouse sits at the eastern-most tip of the North Fork of
Long Island, and just that fact makes it special.
There are a couple of places that offer the best views of the Orient Point
Lighthouse. Certainly, the deck of any of the Orient Point Ferries on their
way to or from New London is one. Few people know, however, that you can
drive right out to it, and it's an incredible place to watch the sunrise.
Most people think that the road ends at the Orient Point Ferry terminal,
but there's a private road that goes a bit further right out to the point.
Be careful, though. It's a private road and not paved or maintained very
well. You can also just park your car at the ferry terminal and walk out
to the point.
This shot wasn't taken from either of those places, however. We took a
motorboat from the Greenport docks about an hour before sunrise and made
the image at sunrise with a medium-format camera without a telephoto,
ensuring a very sharp image. Although it looks like a poster, it's actually
a photograph, since everything, including the type, is printed on high-quality
photographic paper. We've found it looks great framed with a royal blue
matte and metal frame. We can frame it for you for an additional charge.
