Hallock's Bay Sailboat, Orient, New York

This shot was taken at sunrise in the late fall. This is a beautiful old sailboat that was still in the water late enough in the season that I remember I had to wear gloves. It's always hard to shoot anything floating with the slow, fine-grained film I use, since often exposures last up to a second. Miraculously, just as the sun illuminated the underside of the clouds, the wind stopped and the boat kept perfectly still. In the few seconds before the wind started up again, I managed to shoot this image. As with all my images, I never add color-compensating filters. The colors you see are all due to the incredible light at sunrise.
